From “smart materials” curiosity to industry: a path through research, innovation, and teamwork

A professional path is not always clear from the very beginning. Sometimes it grows out of curiosity, from asking the right question at the right moment. This is also the case for Matteo Federici, who now works in the industrial sector after a journey shaped by university studies, research, and close collaboration with companies.

Before starting university, the future was not clearly defined.
“I’ve always been inclined toward scientific subjects, but my interest in materials science and engineering began with my high school thesis. I was undecided about the topic, and after a long search through newspapers and online sources, I became fascinated by the design and development of what were then called smart materials. From there, choosing materials engineering was a natural step.”

The Master’s Thesis and the first industry connections

His academic path takes concrete shape with his master’s thesis, focused on the development of harmonic structures in hot-work tool steels produced through powder metallurgy. The work is carried out in the laboratory, but in close cooperation with local companies. “We relied on companies for sample production and precision machining. The thesis was extremely formative for me and convinced me to explore academic research further, leading me toward a PhD.”

The PhD, carried out in the same metallurgy laboratory, focuses on the development of new materials for braking systems within a project funded by the European Union (Horizon 2020).
“It allowed me to connect with many major European industrial players,” he explains, connections that later proved crucial for entering the job market.

From academia to industry: the satisfaction of a tangible result

The transition to industry comes with several challenges.
“In a company, solutions need to be practical and fast, even for very complex problems. One of the biggest challenges is time management and being able to react quickly to market demands or unexpected issues.”

Today, Matteo works as a Test and Analysis Engineer at Faulhaber, a leading company in motor-driven gear systems powered by brushless and brushed electric motors. His role combines experimental activities with project management.
“I’m responsible for product characterization tests and for the more managerial aspects of development projects.” The greatest satisfaction comes when the work becomes tangible:
“Seeing a new product launched on the market is incredibly rewarding.”

Difficulties arise, especially when expected performance levels are not met. In these cases, teamwork is essential.
“Comparing different perspectives often leads to solving problems. Mental flexibility is also crucial when dealing with daily challenges.”

Looking ahead: innovation and soft skills

Looking to the future, innovation remains the guiding thread.
“The sector is constantly evolving: new materials, new alloys, and advanced manufacturing processes are making possible what until a few years ago existed only on paper.” Alongside technical expertise, soft skills play an increasingly important role.
“Without a solid technical foundation, this job would be very difficult. But technical knowledge alone is not enough, you also need communication skills, teamwork, and strong mental flexibility.”

His final advice is aimed at students and young professionals:
“In my opinion, a team needs continuous and effective communication. Only by collaborating with experts from different fields can daily challenges be tackled more effectively. Contributing your own experience is just as important, it helps avoid mistakes that have already been made and saves time and effort. My personal advice is to adapt your language to your audience: not everyone is a technical expert, and clarity is key to making your ideas understood.”
